Structural Steelwork

About This Service

Structural steelwork sits at the heart of almost every loft conversion and extension — and a surprising number of standalone alterations too. Removing a load-bearing wall to create an open-plan layout, for example, requires a properly sized steel beam to carry the load above. Get the steelwork wrong and you're looking at serious structural problems. Get it right and you won't think about it again. We work with RSJs (rolled steel joists) and universal beams in a range of sizes, suited to everything from a single internal wall removal to the full steel framework of a double-storey extension or multi-room loft conversion. Common applications include opening up kitchens and dining rooms, creating open-plan living spaces, strengthening loft floors to carry the weight of a new room, and supporting new roof structures. We also underpin and support chimney breasts where the stack is being retained above but the breast removed at ground or first floor level. Every project starts with calculations from a qualified structural engineer, who specifies the exact beam sizes and bearing requirements to meet building regulation standards. Our team then coordinates the steelwork installation — which often requires temporary propping, careful sequencing and close coordination with other trades. We supply, deliver and install the steelwork ourselves, rather than subcontracting it out. That keeps quality under our direct control. We take on structural steelwork both as part of our own loft conversion and extension projects across Worthing and West Sussex, and as a standalone service for other builders and homeowners who need the work done properly. Either way, the same experienced team does the job.

Family-run since the fifties. Word-of-mouth has kept us going.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Structural Steelwork

Steel beams (RSJs) are required whenever you remove or alter a load-bearing wall, convert a loft, or make structural changes to your property. The beam carries the weight that the wall or structure previously supported. Without proper steelwork, the building would be structurally unsafe.

Yes — all structural steelwork requires calculations from a qualified structural engineer. We include this in our service. The engineer specifies the exact beam sizes, bearing lengths and pad stone requirements to meet building regulations.

A straightforward single beam installation typically takes 1-2 days. More complex jobs involving multiple beams or significant propping and sequencing may take 3-5 days. We always provide temporary support (acrow props) while the steelwork is installed.
